Timing Belt & Timing Chain Repair Sarasota
A timing belt or chain is an important part of your engine that is responsible for moving the camshaft, crankshaft, and other parts. It can be difficult to differentiate between a timing belt and a timing chain because they are both used in the same way. However, there are some key differences between them that you should know about before deciding which one to use on your car.
Timing Belt Repair vs Timing Chain Replacement
A broken or snapped belt or chain can cause serious damage to your car’s motor if it isn’t dealt with quickly. But how do you tell the difference? A “timing belt” doesn’t have any metal links like a “timing chain.” Instead, it features rubber belts that are connected by steel or other durable components. These belts are designed to stretch over time, so they should be checked regularly to ensure that they’re not too stretched out. If it snaps while you’re driving your car, the results could be catastrophic.
Replacing a Timing Belt
A timing belt is meant to be replaced every 70,000-90,000 miles. If it’s not replaced during this time period, the rubber may become too stretched and could snap while you’re driving. When this happens, your car’s motor will be destroyed and there is a chance that other parts of your engine may also be damaged. This can be an extremely costly repair operation!
Replacing a Timing Chain
A broken timing chain is generally less expensive to fix than a broken timing belt, but it’s also more difficult because you have to remove several components of your engine. This can take a lot of time and cost a great deal in terms of parts and labour. If the tensioners are not aligned properly when you’re replacing the timing chain, this can also cause further problems down the road.
